I got these hiking pants from REI today. North Face Paramount Porter. They are convertible, so you can have pants, capris, or shorts anytime. I usually never try on clothing before I buy them, and this time is no exception. I picked out a size 10, and figured if I fit them now, great!, if not, I should fit in the future! Alas, twas the latter that came true. So these $45 pants will have to wait for me to get thinner first. But they do seem pretty comfy after I tried cramming my tummy bulges into them. Great fabric plus a ton of good reviews online. So yeah, I'll let you know when I can fit into them. Wish me luck!

Edit: I just realized that I just posted an entry on eating ice cream (twice!) and then saying in this post that I want to lose weight, hahaahhhaha... okay fine, I'll try not to make ice cream so often! =P

Almond vanilla ice cream

What do you do if you purposely don't buy ice cream in the supermarkets because you're trying to be healthy but then you're stressing out the day before meeting your advisor and you NEED ice cream?

Make it yourself! Yes, that's how desperate I got last Friday. One memory of fifth grade was making ice cream in a ziplock bag. So naturally I had to google it and woila, so simple! Since I was back in Berkeley, I had more resources and luckily I actually had everything I needed: cream, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, ice, and salt. And to even one-up the recipe, I added almond extract. So I ended up with such a good almond vanilla ice cream in only 15-20 minutes! Yuuuuuum!

I have wonderful beginner's luck at making things, and so of course it turned out perfect! (Not so great the second time, I ended up drinking it. =) )

Being the good little worker that I am, I arrived on time to the first lecture of the statistical computing course that I'm TAing this semester. I made my way to the back and sat there, trying to blend in with the other 70-plus students that were already waiting for lecture to start. I thought it'd work fine since I noticed there were several students who look older than I do.

So there we were, all my students (I'm the sole TA for this course) and I were awaiting the professor. WHO NEVER SHOWED UP. The class was schedule to start at 1pm (which is actually 1:10pm on Berkeley Standard Time). By 1:20 something, we were all getting antsy: where was our professor? Even the late students who came in were surprised that they weren't actually late after all! By then, the class had made bets on whether the next person to come in the door would be the professor or not.

I made my way back outside and tried spotting the professor. Still not there. Students started to leave. Finally, I did what I thought I had to do. I went back in and took over the class. I did what I could to keep them entertained, hoping the professor would show up sometime to relieve me of having to B.S. everything in front of over 70 students. But since he didn't show up, I did the best I could to convince them this would be one of the best classes they would take in their college career, chatted them, and answered their questions. I really had no idea what the course is going to be like, since the professor was a bit unorganized and uninformative about everything himself. I made up a quick sign up sheet for the waitlisters. Finally I let them leave after begging them to all come back on Friday. I guaranteed the prof would show up on Friday.

Worried, I made my way back to Evans quickly to find out what happened to the professor. I go to his office where he's just sitting in front of his computer. I asked, "What happened?" He goes, "What?", nonchalantly. I said, "You missed the first day of class, all of us were waiting." He said, "No, class is at 2pm." Then, in a louder voice, I said, "NO, it's at 1pm!" Subsequently, he said, "Oh wells, they got a break this time."

Yep, that was what I had to do today. I'm gonna be the best darn TA these kiddies have!

* Am I coming down with something? The pile of tissues is slowly becoming an obvious mountain on my bedside table. I'm still up to wash away remnants of horror movie I just watched.

* All day, I started to regret being a chicken and not meeting up with an old friend. Why did I make so many stupid excuses? If he only knew how sorry I am and how I hope that he won't give up on me and try again sometime...

* I'm dreading a bit going back to Berkeley. Why? I just don't know what I'm doing there really.

* I'm not sure why I'm blogging while sad; back then no one read it and I felt like that whomever the posts were meant for, even a nameless stranger, that person would read and understand. In a way, it was as if I could see my life on the outside and that lessened the acuteness of the reality of knowing I could never really experienced another life but my own.

anyhoo, tis a new year again, and i'm running out of batteries, who wants to go ice skating with me in berkeley?

another note: i haven't named my new camera yet... ideas?

This reminds me of the scene in Alien when the juices of the alien burn through every imaginable material and turn it into disgusting goops that drip everywhere. You do not want to see what's under this weird cookie.

So apparently, I got lazy cutting up this huge block of Ghiradelli semi-sweet chocolate (gooood stuff!) And so I incorporated oh-so-yummy large chunks into the batter. This and the fact that I attempted to spatula this onto the cooling rack prematurely resulted in a large gooey slop of chocolate that was located strategically in the middle above open metal slats to fall through like alien blood.

Who wants this special cookie?

- the nerdy accountant in ugly betty is awfully cute, why do i think so? cuz i'm a dork and also the fact that i'm smart enough to know that the actor playing him must be hot in real life and they only dorkified him enough for the role

- i'm wasting too much time reloading my last.fm page, who cares if i find out what i just listened to?

- i couldn't remember why my sides hurt today until i remembered that i added on some exercises while waiting for kasper to finish at the gym

- i can't wait to show tammy that after so many years, i no longer have a farmer tan and that i'm somewhat buff again after a 3 year break from weight lifting at ucla

- playing music loud is fun and yet i feel so guilty for bugging people with it

- i still don't know why i'm not sleeping yet considering i only slept from 3am to 6am yesterday

- i'm also wasting too much time on craigslist even though i know 99.99% of the ads are crap

- chocolate is playing: as a child of 25 this is the straw final straw

- music makes me happy, why am i happy? am i happy? should i be?

- i say it's time for a mango mandarin bubble bath, i'll pretend i'm swimming

I'm trying to escape from things in life by just mindlessly working out.

I have no idea what's happening but this is what it is.

The only thing I look forward to everyday is swimming, and if I don't, then I go weight lifting.

This guy just posted a new video of skating the Broadway and Stockton Tunnels in San Francisco on the Friday Night Skate. Yep, I've went through both of them with the group, just once though... not sure if I'll do it ever again. But thrilling, ain't it? =) Woooosh! Speed is good.

Hmm, that's 0.95 mile in 1.5 hours => So that's about 0.63 mph, if you include breaks.

Still need breaks after every length, hopefully can build up to swimming more without stopping.

Alternating breathing on both sides now.

Now that I'm unable to do two of my obsessions: rollerblading and jumproping, I've had to move on to something more feasible but difficult. And that would be: swimming.

I've never liked swimming. Sure I learned as a 7th and 8th grader just so I could graduate from Arcadia High, but everytime I tried swimming for fun after that resulted in complete suffering: feelings of drowning, coughing, swallowing chlorinated water,inability to breathe, water up the nose, struggling halfway in the pool, etc...

The last time I was even in a pool or a large body of water excluding my bathtub was at UCLA with Tammy years and years ago, and I didn't even do much then. But since my accident, I had to get off my fat butt and do some sort of exercise and since my favorite activities are out of the question (unfortunately for a very long time, damn ankle!), swimming seemed like the good option to me.

So last Saturday I ventured to take a water aerobics class at 10:30am. Old ladies kicked my ass in this class. I couldn't even tread water in the 7ft side of the pool! Let's not even get into trying to swim; everytime the class moved to the other end of the pool to do exercises, I was left behind in the dust.

Even after that, I resolved to give swimming a try. Luckily for me, the pool is so close to my apt that I even overwalked it the first time I tried finding it! And you know I ain't in no mood to overwalk anything nowadays. Anyhoo, the Hearst pool is just lovely. It's open a lot of hours and has a great view of the Campanile.

Tuesday

SLOOOW lane, so slow that the slow people kept passing me! One lap, I got stuck in the middle and didn't move an inch.
Inability to do front crawl, managed a combo of breaststroke, backstroke, elementary backstroke and kickboard in order to make it across a pool that's 33 1/3 yards in length.
I had to take enormously long breaks in between also.

Wednesday

~ 1.5 hours
Still the slow lane but now upgraded to occasional front crawl. Twas raining while I swam and the night was lovely. =) Thank goodness for 80 degree pool.

Thursday

16 lengths = 8 laps = 533 yards

Started out in the slow lane for a few laps then decided to scootch over to the medium lane. And found out that I went faster than the medium people, mostly because I still panic a lot in the water and anything that gets me faster to the other end so I can breathe is a good thing. Which isn't a good thing in the long run, since I end up so out of breath and dying by then. By now, the front crawl is my stroke of choice and I seem to have gotten better at coordinating the breathing.

Anyhoo, I seem to be improving a bit, so that keeps me psyched about going frequently now. =) I probably need a waterproof ipod to keep me going longer. But so far, I like it and hopefully I'll get healthier, my foot seems to like it.

And there's hot naked women in the shower room, what's not to like about swimming?

I woke up this morning to find almost 20 new gmails from myspace.
I understand why music groups have to mindlessly add everyone to their friends list, but I guess there isn't anyway for me to have those requests stop coming to my gmail account since there might be real friends who want to add me. (Isn't there?? Come on, you know you want me as a friend!)

And besides music groups, I've got middle-aged guys and gangsta 20-somethings who want to chat with me. Can't they not read that I'm in graduate school? You'd think that's one thing that'll turn them off already. If only I were this popular outside myspace, I'd have my own posse of sugar daddies and guys with riced-up rides.

I'm currently in the middle of another attempt to break a habit that's so old that I can't remember when I started it. I don't think I need your help; it's really up to me and whatever willpower I can manage to be able to stop successfully this time. I can't even count the number of times I've tried to stop, but it's never lasted longer than a few weeks. I'll let you know if I fail again this time, but seriously I'm about to turn 25, still having hung onto this for over 2 decades, I really have to just quit. QUUUUIT!! Right, yelling at myself will work.

I've tried googling this to find tips, but as I expected, I didn't find much of anything. At least some sites said a related habit was more common in intelligent people when they get nervous. I'll believe that since it was written online, of course. It seems I have a rare "talent", though I found that one girl had an entire blog devoted to cracking this habit. Her sentiments and craziness regarding this are so eerily similar to mine that I sent her an email to tell her that I was going through the same thing. She even posted pictures about it, which is something that even I, snap happy girl, won't consider ever doing. She still hasn't replied. I wonder if she has quit, though a 20-some year habit is not something you can break in a day.

The peculiar thing is that I've only finally mentioned this to some friends of mine and was surprised to find out they also have another version of this habit. Which I never noticed, and I was quite sure everyone notices mine. But maybe some people just don't see things right in front of them. Unfortunately for me, they don't want to quit. There goes my pep squad. I can't imagine how they do what they do, and they can't imagine what I do. Well, good luck to us all, whether we care or not.

Anyhoo, twas a completely blah day besides In-N-Out. But hearing this song on VH1 for some reason made me really happy and feel fabulous. =)

i noticed jamie at the welcome party and went over to introduce myself:

me: hi!! you must be jamie, first year masters student from ucla right?
jamie: yeah, how do you know??
me: nicolas told me
jamie: who??

(so apparently nicolas told me about her but failed to tell her about me... just great, now jamie thinks i'm stalking her... )

My parents are constantly worried if I'll survive when they take me back up to Berkeley on Saturday. I said, I can do anything I need to, just a bit slower and lazier, is all.

I've always tried to never ask anyone for help. And then this policy just went out the window when I got hurt. It sure does feel weird to have everything brought to me when I can't even get a cup of water by myself.

But I don't need to worry much, and so my parents shouldn't. What the heck did I ever do to deserve such nice friends beats me, but everyone has been so good to me in doing things for me and offering help.

And now, the professor I wanted to TA for has emailed me to let me know that she and the dept chair are going to try their best to get me research support so I don't have to teach this semester.

I'm being smothered with love, and I don't care if I can't breathe. =)

My friend Loreen just sent me this picture of me on Dave's skateboard in Golden Gate Park that fateful day. I had no idea such a picture existed... but there it is. Probably just minutes before I fell off and put my left ankle through hell. Sigh... I was doing so well with working out by skating before it happened. See? My left calf was strong! Now my left leg consists of a bag of fat dangling from my tibia. Woo! =)

hopping on one leg is getting to be funner than crutches

and it's not so bad since it's just like the jumproping that i'll be missing for awhile =(
