fudgers....work is going okay...i spend aaaall day programming...debugging ain't that fun, but solving the problem in the end is great! i still don't see what the goals are, i feel like i'm just serving as a person who knows programming to them instead of a bioinformaticist working with theory...it's all good still, the skills i learn will definitely come in handy when i go back to the nelson lab in the fall....people are nice in the lab, i go feed the fishies during lunch time....i feel good being there....i help the people that help to cure cancer...so i'm curing cancer indirectly....so i'm technically fulfilling one of my life goals: cancer research....time goes by really fast in the lab.....dr. hsu is a really cool person too...she tells me stuff about her son i never knew...

You know you're a redneck Bioinformaticist when...

You think a BLAST job involves cherry bombs and a mailbox.

You think a 'Maximum Parsimony Tree' is where you go to pick the most parsimons.

You think a drug discovery pipeline involves the revenoors and the still out back.

You're afraid the Nucleotides might have an undertow.

You think that gap extension penalties might involve the growing space in Pa's teeth.

You find yourself explaining the difference between Beowulf Clusters and SMP servers by comparing them to a case of beer and a keg.

You think that an algorithm involves a former vice president trying to dance.

You get confused about the difference between a database and a washtub bass.

You use a divining rod to make structure predictions.

You are working on a project to make tobacco grow leaves in little packets that fit right between your cheek and gum.

You think Gene Prediction involves guessing how much longer your britches will last.

You think that 'Wash U' is something that a kid would write in the dirt on your back window.

You are afraid of Unix, just 'cuz of the name.

You think that multiple alignments are the way you get 10 kids and a hound dog to fit in the same bed.

You think that PSI-Blast came from the comic books.

You think that a 'superfamily' is on saturday mornings at 9 AM.

You think that a Rasmol is eating the 'taters in your garden.

You stoke the fire with a paralogs.

You think the Venter is broken on your carburetor.

You think that Homology should be illegal.

Q: How many mathematicians does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

A: Just one, once you've managed to present the problem in terms he/she
is familiar with.

In earlier work, Wiener [1] has shown that one mathematician
can change a light bulb.

If k mathematicians can change a light bulb, and if one more simply
watches them do it, then k+1 mathematicians will have changed the
light bulb.

Therefore, by induction, for all n in the positive integers,
n mathematicians can change a light bulb.

Theorem:
1 + 2 + 4 + 8 + 16 + ... = -1

It is well known that in computers the number -1 is represented by FFFFFFFF (hexadecimal) or 1 + 2 + 4 + 8 + 16 + ...

Proof:

Let x = 1 + 2 + 4 + 8 + 16 + ...

=> 2x = 2 + 4 + 8 + 16 + ...
-------------------------------- -
-x = 1

x = -1

From: clubok@physics11 (Kenneth S. Clubok)

Theorem: 1 = -1 .
Proof:
1 -1
-- = --
-1 1

1 -1
sqrt[ -- ] = sqrt[ -- ]
-1 1

sqrt[1] sqrt[-1]
------- = -------
sqrt[-1] sqrt[1]

1=-1 (by cross-multiplication)

And here's my personal favorite:

Use integration by parts to find the anti-derivative of 1/x. One
can get the amusing result that 0=1. (Until you realize you have to put
in the limits.)

From: Benjamin.J.Tilly@dartmouth.edu (Benjamin J. Tilly)

Theorem: 1$ = 1c.
Proof:
And another that gives you a sense of money disappearing...

1$ = 100c
= (10c)^2
= (0.1$)^2
= 0.01$
= 1c

Here $ means dollars and c means cents. This one is scary in that I
have seen PhD's in math who were unable to see what was wrong with this
one. Actually I am crossposting this to sci.physics because I think
that the latter makes a very nice introduction to the importance of
keeping track of your dimensions...

All statistical geneticists are not humorless nerds!

Unfortunately, the above theorem has been disproved :

I received the following letter regarding my theorem:

Thanks for providing this web-site. Quite a tough theorem, though.

"All statistical geneticists are not humorless nerds!"

That means we only need to find one statistical geneticist who is a humorless nerd to disprove your theory. As I am a statistical geneticist, and the very act of producing this email classifies me as a humorless nerd, I'm afraid your theory is disproved. May I suggest the less rigorous:

"Not all statistical geneticists are humorless nerds!"

"It is still true that you can never be too rich or too thin or know too much mathematics."

Dr. Robert Elston, in his 1996 Allan Award Address, referring to a figure full of mathematics describing the Elston-Stewart algorithm and the Haseman-Elston method:

"There must be many persons in the audience for whom this is Greek; and I suspect there are even some who would find it more comprehensible if it were Greek. My friend and one-time colleague Mary K. Pelias calls it, perhaps appropriately, 'chicken scratches'."

Dan Masys, M.D., Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine, UCSD:
"Researchers often want Bioinformaticians to be Biomagicians, people who can make significant results out of non-significant data, or Biomorticians, people who can bury data that disagree with the researcher's prior hypothesis."

"Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital."

Black Eyed Peas - "Where Is The Love"

Lyrics:

What’s wrong with the world, mama
People livin’ like they ain’t got no mamas
I think the whole world addicted to the drama
Only attracted to things that’ll bring you trauma
Overseas, yeah, we try to stop terrorism
But we still got terrorists here livin’
In the USA, the big CIA
The Bloods and The Crips and the KKK
But if you only have love for your own race
Then you only leave space to discriminate
And to discriminate only generates hate
And when you hate then you’re bound to get irate, yeah
Badness is what you demonstrate
And that’s exactly how a n**** works and operates
N**, you gotta have love just to set it straight
Take control of your mind and meditate
Let your soul gravitate to the love, y’all, y’all

People killin’, people dyin’
Children hurt and you hear them cryin’
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek

Father, Father, Father help us
Send us some guidance from above
‘Cause people got me, got me questionin’
Where is the love (Love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love
The love, the love

It just ain’t the same, always unchanged
New days are strange, is the world insane
If love and peace is so strong
Why are there pieces of love that don’t belong
Nations droppin’ bombs
Chemical gasses fillin’ lungs of little ones
With the ongoin’ sufferin’ as the youth die young
So ask yourself is the lovin’ really gone
So I could ask myself really what is goin’ wrong
In this world that we livin’ in people keep on givin’ in
Makin’ wrong decisions, only visions of them dividends
Not respectin’ each other, deny thy brother
A war is goin’ on but the reason’s undercover
The truth is kept secret, it’s swept under the rug
If you never know truth then you never know love
Where’s the love, y’all, come on (I don’t know)
Where’s the truth, y’all, come on (I don’t know)
Where’s the love, y’all

People killin’, people dyin’
Children hurt and you hear them cryin’
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek

Father, Father, Father help us
Send us some guidance from above
‘Cause people got me, got me questionin’
Where is the love (Love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love
The love, the love

I feel the weight of the world on my shoulder
As I’m gettin’ older, y’all, people gets colder
Most of us only care about money makin’
Selfishness got us followin’ our own direction
Wrong information always shown by the media
Negative images is the main criteria
Infecting the young minds faster than bacteria
Kids act like what they see in the cinema
Yo’, whatever happened to the values of humanity
Whatever happened to the fairness in equality
Instead in spreading love we spreading animosity
Lack of understanding, leading lives away from unity
That’s the reason why sometimes I’m feelin’ under
That’s the reason why sometimes I’m feelin’ down
There’s no wonder why sometimes I’m feelin’ under
Gotta keep my faith alive til love is found

People killin’, people dyin’
Children hurt and you hear them cryin’
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek

Father, Father, Father help us
Send us some guidance from above
‘Cause people got me, got me questionin’
Where is the love (Love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)

franiwack (10:38:11 PM): yeah, it was really fun
franiwack (10:38:15 PM): they are all so cool
Kudos999 (10:38:18 PM): yup, bet you had great fun. it's like a social event.
franiwack (10:38:23 PM): the profs are actually very very good at ultimate frisbee
franiwack (10:38:31 PM): ooh, i actually got one in the goal area
franiwack (10:38:38 PM): so our team made one goal
franiwack (10:38:40 PM): by me

franiwack (10:41:26 PM): actually, me not that good
franiwack (10:41:34 PM): all i did was go inside the goal area and catch it :-)
franiwack (10:41:59 PM): hehe, most of us be nerds, we all white
franiwack (10:42:01 PM): no tan
franiwack (10:42:15 PM): and haha, we talked and joked about biology and computer science
franiwack (10:42:23 PM): yesh, all of us scientist nerds
Kudos999 (10:44:55 PM): wow, so this opportunity at csla really worked out well, cuz you meet new ppl, do new things, go to new places, earn some money, and have fun at the same time
Kudos999 (10:45:32 PM): hmmm is tammy there? oh wells, then we don't need chatroom.
franiwack (10:47:56 PM): i don't know
franiwack (10:47:59 PM): i invited tammy too
franiwack (10:48:03 PM): but she no response

Dang...gotta go back to school tomorrow already. I didn't feel as if I wisely wasted my time this weekend. I didn't do nothing....
I finished my program, it's ready for presentation tomorrow. I didn't even finish reading papers. Can't find one that isn't too hard, which is difficult, but if I'm gonna be doing this for a major part of my life, I'll need to try and understand this stuff. After changing numerous times, my current paper of choice is : "Estimating the occurrence of false positives and false negatives in microarray studies by approximating and partitioning the empirical distribution of p-values" sounds interesting eh??? Well, hopefully if I ultimately decide to use it, nobody will sleep through my presentation or not care....

Happy July 4th everybody!

Hope you all are having fun, unfortunately, the picture below is the closest I get to fireworks this year, and the constant noise from neighbors =)

And... my program is not working properly....it runs and all, but it once in a while spits out funky stuff that doesn't make sense!!!
Drive me nuts, will ya?

Harry Potter completed! 900 pages in only 3 days!
Haven't read for fun in a while. It's good!!
However, I didn't appreciate Harry's teenage anger and shouting that much...too much capitalization.

And yes...somebody died....so sad... I really admired that person too.

Now, I have to get back to actual work, boohoo!
